Professional Development

Collaboration    Inspiration    Imagination

At Showcase 2007, IPAY designed a professional development series that engaged our membership in a thoughtful discussion on pertinent issues pertaining to performing arts for young people. Building on the positive response from the participants, this year’s series continues to foster collaboration, inspiration and imagination in the field. Participants will register for one of three tracks. Each track will explore one topic in depth, allowing time for a deeper, more meaningful experience. On day three, the group comes together to share lessons learned and best practices. This series aims to provide participants with tools and strategies for their work and to continue advancing IPAY’s vision.

Keynote Address*

Conference attendees will have the special privilege of enjoying the keynote address by beloved actress, singer and author, Julie Andrews, and her writing partner and daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton. The mother and daughter team have co-authored over 14 books for young readers of all ages that nurture the imagination and celebrate a sense of wonder.

Track I: Building A Network of Collaborations – What are the advantages?*

The performing arts for young people are one of the biggest cultural success stories in Scotland over the past decade. The organization Imaginate has developed a successful framework to create partnerships and collaborations among artists, presenters, educators and funders. By exploring this model, we can gain valuable insights and understandings on the process of creating significant work. This interactive discussion is ideal for those interested in developing collaborative models.

Track II: Nuts and Bolts of Touring in North America – Are you tour ready?*

So you've aroused the interest of a presenter in North America? What do you do next? How do you build upon that interest to create a viable tour of North America? What are the logistics and practicalities of touring in Canada and the USA? This hands-on working session will take you through touring contracts, work visas, co-productions of regional touring, technical riders and all the mechanics you need to know to get your show on the road.

Track III: Cultivating Inspiration – Why do we create and present the work we do?*

As we create, produce and present our annual seasons, there are many contributing factors we must take into account. How does inspiration play out among our decisions? Are we willing to take risks? From the creation of an original work or adaptation to the presentation of it on the stage, what inspires us to make our choices? How do these choices translate to our audiences? This discussion explores these questions, inspiring participants to view their work in new ways.

* The Keynote Address and Daily Dialogues are free and open to IPAY members. There is a fee of $35 for non-IPAY members to attend any or all of the Professional Development events.
